Security

At the Bank of Burlington, we're dedicated to protecting your account! We work hard to safeguard our customer's financial information and to provide you with important information to protect your sensitive financial information. We believe that providing up-to-date information on the latest scams is a great defense against fraud.

Here are a few general tips to help you safeguard your account information:

  • Check your credit report. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires each of the three national credit reporting companies to provide customers with a free copy of their credit report once every 12 months by visiting ww.annualcreditreport.com or by contacting each of the three major credit bureaus directly.
    • Equifax - 1-800-685-1111 www.equifax.com
    • Experian - 1-888-397-3742 www.experian.com
    • Trans Union - 1-800-888-4213 www.transunion.com
  • If you bank or pay credit cards on-line, avoid passwords that include personal information, such as mother's maiden name or date of birth. Instead, use something unique that only you know.
  • When using a website where you provide your credit card, debit card or other personal information, look for signs that the page is secure. Look for an "s" after the "http" in the web address bar of the page, and look for a padlock symbol in the address bar or in the lower right corner of the window.
  • Never give your PIN (Personal Identification Number) out to anyone.
  • Don't use your Social Security Number on your driver's license or other forms of identification.
  • Don't give out personal information over the phone, through the mail, or on the Internet unless you've initiated the contact and are sure you know who you're dealing with. If you must share personal information, confirm that you are dealing with a legitimate organization.
  • If you receive an e-mail asking for personal information, do not hit the reply button or click on any website link in the e-mail. Instead, go directly to the sender's website by typing in the sender's website address.
  • Protect your personal information. Don't leave sensitive documents containing personal information where anyone can see them.
  • Use a shredder before disposing of personal records, especially financial records - preferably a cross-cut shredder (thieves have been known to paste together single-shred documents to obtain information).
  • Don't use an automatic log-in feature on your computer.
  • Guard your mail from theft by depositing outgoing mail in post office collection boxes and promptly removing mail from your mailbox after it has been delivered. If you plan on going on vacation, temporarily stop mail delivery (the U.S. Postal Service will hold it for you) or have someone you trust check your mail for you.
  • Set up email alerts for your account, delivered right to your email inbox or your mobile phone (via text message), so you can be aware of any unusual activity as quickly as possible.
  • Monitor your accounts regularly online so you can identify fraudulent transaction faster.
  • Avoid using public computers for email or sensitive matters such as financial correspondence or online banking; instead, use a secure computer or your personal mobile device.
